House Names...Ideas for naming your home
The British have been naming their homes for centuries. The custom of house naming started years ago, when the gentry named their great halls, mansions and castles from their family title or the location. These days, few can boast a grand address, but we still choose to mark our patch on the planet with a unique sign of our individuality.
An act of Parliament in 1765 decreed that every house in a town or city would have a number followed by the name of the street or road, this giving rise to the familiar address format still in use. Homeowners have been personalising their residences, be they cottages, town houses, bungalows and other dwellings by adding a name to their address, as well as the house numbers.
House names are inspired by an amazing and sometimes amusing array of sources, everything from locations to legends, hobbies to honeymoon destinations, quirky or quaint the tradition of house naming is definitely still alive and kicking....
