Please ask if you would like any advice on letter height or sign size. We're always happy to help.

This is a rough guide to estimate the height of the letters for a particular size of house sign.......Most fonts measure approx the same across left to right (including the small space between letters) as their heightDifferent fonts vary, for example Ariel takes up less space than say Bookman or Times Roman, but for the purpose of example, we will assume the house name is in all Times, all capital letters, with one word on one line.

Capital letters

For example:

SUNNYSIDE

There are 9 letters so if 1.5" high letters are required the sign would need to be approx 16/18" long.

9 X 1.5" + 3" allowance at ends of sign = 16.5" (sign size 16/18")

To calculate the letter height or size of sign for 2 or 3 line house names the letters and spaces for the longest line should be counted.

House names consisting of 2 or 3 words, will have a space between words, which should be counted as one letter.

Upper and lower case letters are more difficult to size, but as a rough rule of thumb, the lower case letter is two-thirds of the capital height. So for a two-word house name for example:
Rose Cottage
2 capital letters (2" high) + 1 letter space (3 x 2") =  6 inches length.

Plus 9 lower case letters (1.33" high) = 12.3 inch lettering length approx.
Total length sign required for 2 inch capitals upper and lower case letters is 6 inch + 12.3 inch 3 inch (for end spacing and screw holes) = 21 inch approx.
i.e. 6 + 12.3 + 3 inch = Min 21" length sign required
For round and oval signs, where the lettering is arced around the top or bottom of the house sign, if the length of the sign from left to right is say 12 inches, the area for the lettering will be approx the same, giving a useable area for the house name of approx 12 inches.
By now I'm sure you've realised that it can be a bit tricky estimating the letter height, especially with different font styles, various letter combinations, (e.g. W's M's I's) and upper and lower cases.
